(ANSA) - Aosta, August 12 - The 40th edition of crafts exhibition Foire d'Ete, which was held in Aosta, in the northern Italian region of Valle d'Aosta, on August 9 and 10, 2008, registered 18,000 visitors, the regional council for education and culture.

The art exhibitions were visited by 4,260 people while archaeological sites attracted 4,534 visitors.

A lot of local people and tourists participated in the initiatives of Foire d'Ete, which shows the desire of the visitors to get to know and appreciate the cultural heritage of the area, the regional councillor for education and culture, Laurent Vierin commented.

The regional authorities aim to encourage the interest and enjoyment of the public visiting local cultural heritage, Vierin said. The culture of Valle d'Aosta, which include archaeological sites, folklore and historical monuments, should be part of the Valle d'Aosta citizen life and cultural tourism could become the driving force for the social and economic development of the region, Vierin added.

As ANSA reported on March 17, 2008, the cultural sites of the northern Italian region of Valle d'Aosta attracted 277,000 visitors in 2007, up by 40 pct compared to 2006.
