Pollein
Tree park and open-air geological museum, also features sports facilities
The “Grand Place” tourist facilities in Pollein spread out over 10 hectares of the alluvial plain of the Dora Baltea, just a few kilometres from Aosta, and it consists of extensive lawns, used mostly for popular sports, a children's playground and a loop track for joggers. On either side of the lawns, there are benches and drinking water fountains. Around the embankment where the building is situated (used as a multi-purpose centre), there is a pavement, along which visitors can benefit from a 360° view,
f
eaturing four panels, heading towards the cardinal points, illustrating the main geographical, geomorphological and geological elements of the landscape. A tree park with shrubs and trees, including two Gingko Biloba trees, surrounds the building on three sides. A series of masses, of the main types of rock which make up the mountains of the Valle d’Aosta, can be seen on either side of a trail, with access for the disabled, leading through the shrubs, hedges and trees in the park. The rocks follow one another according to a geological and geographical
order: observing them in sequence is tantamount to climbing back up the valley of the Dora Baltea from the morainic amphitheatre of Ivrea to the Mont Blanc. Each mass is accompanied by a descriptive panel featuring the name of the rock, the metamorphic environment in which it was formed, the geological unit it belongs to, its mineral composition and the geographic zone of origin.
