Cathedral Treasury Museum
Preserved and protected by the age-old walls of the cathedral, the priceless value of the Treasury museum.
In the historic centre of the
town, behind the main “Emile Chanoux”square,
2 ancient bell-towers can clearly be seen of the old Aosta Cathedral. Archaeological excavations have enabled the reconstruction of different construction phases of the building of the church, whose origins date back to the mid IV century. The church contains a crypt dating back to theXI century and, next door, a fifteenth-century cloister. The museum, connected to the ambulatory area is particularly interesting due to its variety and wealth
of preserved objects: they range from the ivory diptych by Anicio Probo from the Late Roman period - representing the Emperor Onorio, to the remains of monumental, fifteenth-century tombs by
Stefano Mossettaz
- representing
Oger Moriset,
Francesco di Challant and Tommaso II of Savoy, to gold, Baroque jewellery.
There are also precious
international gold, Gothic jewellery by Jean de Malines, including an absolute work of art reflected in the San Grato
relic case. There is also an interesting rock crystal cross from the fourteenth century
that comes from
RhĂŞmes, the reliquary bust of St. John The Baptist, the finely decorated processional sticks and the missals belonging to various bishops. There is also a series of very old, wooden sculpturesand,
crucifixes and various sacred facades. The most important object in the museum is the oval, agate cameo from the I century A.D.
