Roman city walls
The surrounding walls of the Roman city still visible today
When is it open: everyday
What's not to be missed:Â the Travertine marble covering (especially on the southern section)
Where is it:Â around the historic centre of Aosta (see below)
Why?… Because it's worth it: it is one of the few Roman walls still intact
The city walls of Augusta Praetoria form a rectangle measuring 724 metres by 572 and was made up of an internal layer of river rock and an external layer of Travertine blocks. Areas in which the coating is still visible: Via Carducci, via Carrel (where
the bus station is located), Via Monte Solarolo and Via Abbé Chanoux. In Via Festaz, particularly at the crossroads with Via Vevey, you can see the openings in the wall to enable the passage of modern city roads.
