Roman arch in Donnas
An iconic work of Roman pride Â
When is it open: everyday
What's not to be missed:Â a picturesque walk along the tracks left by Roman carriages
Where is it:Â the Donnas district
Why?… Because it's worth it: an impressive, bare rock transformation
The road called the Consolare delle Gallie, built to connect Rome to Valle del Rodano, is at its most characteristic along the Donnas section, cut into the bare rock and measuring 221 metres long. The size of the excavation is emphasised by the rocky spur that was left behind, inside which the arch was dug: it is four metres thick, 4 metres
high and withalmost three metres between the two jambs: in medieval times it was used as a gateway to the district, which was closed at night. You can still see tracks left on the road by the carriages, while a short distance after the arch you can see the milestones with the number XXXVI displaying the distance in "miles" from Donnas to Aosta (around 50 Km).
