(ANSA) - Saint Vincent (Aosta), May 9 - Almost 5.0 million Italian companies operate in the wine tourism sector and generate an average annual turnover of 2.5 bln euro ($3.867 bln), it was announced during the international food and wine tourism congress BITEG Forum 2008, running in Serralunga d'Alba, in the northern Italian region of Piedmont, on May 9-10, 2008.
The 82 biggest Italian wine producing companies generate an average turnover of 3.0 bln euro ($4.640 bln). Direct wine sales at the cellars account for 7.5 pct of the turnover. The cellar brands increase the wine sales by 35 pct, it emerged at the congress. Some 30 pct of the success of Italy's cellars is due to the traditional wine making process and 25 pct is due to the winés presence in specialised guides and magazines, it was announced.
According to experts participating in BITEG Forum 2008, the number of Italian wine producers is expected to double in the next years. (ANSA).
